Chatham Ruby Facts

Chatham was the first company in the world to commercially produced flux ruby in 1958. Chatham lab grown synthetic rubies are not imitations or inexpensive flame fusion stones found in class rings and costume jewelry. The Chatham created ruby is identical to its natural counterpart. Only by careful examination under high power magnification can a trained gemologist separate the natural ruby from the Chatham lab grown synthetic ruby.

The finest rubies have come from Burma. They are now very rare and extremely expensive. Ruby is also mined in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Africa. Unfortunately the mining process used to obtain natural ruby is very harmful to the environment and leaves deep scares for centuries. The production of Chatham rubies is not harmful to the environment.

Many natural rubies on the market today have been artificially color enhanced. While this treatment is detectable by experts and is sometimes permanent, it does effect the value of the stone. Color enhanced ruby is less valuable than one of naturally fine color. Chatham Lab Created Rubies are never artificially color enhanced or treated. The color is natural and permanent.
