Chatham Alexandrite Facts

In 1975, Chatham Research Labs made history once again with their announcement of successfully growing the chrysoberyl mineral, Alexandrite. While natural alexandrite is extremely rare and expensive, inexpensive synthetic color change imitation stones have been around for over 80 years and are often are mistaken for valuable heirlooms.

Alexandrite is famous for its ability to change colors in different light sources. Under indoor lighting conditions it can be a raspberry red while outdoors it will turn a beautiful teal green. Chatham alexandrites possess exceptional color change properties.

First discovered in Russia in 1830 on the birthday of Czar Alexander 11, the stone was named in his honor.

Although the mining methods employed by the prospectors of this gemstone are very damaging to the environment, Chatham lab created synthetic Alexandrite is grown in a completely environmentally responsible process.
